It was 7.00pm and here I was arriving in Littlemore where I was going to be trying something very new to me – Zumba...
Although being very keen on keeping fit, this was something I had yet to experience. Walking into the hall, I immediately saw just how popular Zumba really was with around 20 people; all of different ages, heights and sizes. We had 10 minutes before we started and they were already eager to get going; now I was excited!!!
Tamara, the fitness trainer and owner of Zumba and True Balance and Beauty, introduced herself to me. Whilst waiting for everyone to arrive, she explained to me why she is so passionate about her work.
At a very young age, Tamara suffered a crush fracture to her lower vertebrae, which led to a metal plate being inserted into her hip destroying her dream of dancing. In 2004 however, this plate was removed and Tamara was able to start her journey to recovery, believing this could be her chance to dance again.
She then went on to receive holistic treatments where she undertook various treatments to rebuild what she thought she had nearly lost. Due to these treatments Tamara has now opened True Balance and Beauty where she offers a wide range of chronic muscle and tissue treatments. For further information please visit www.truebalance.biz.
I hadn’t even started the session and I was already overwhelmed, but not by the workout, but by this inspiring woman. When the session started it became immediately apparent I had no reason to panic about my lack of training. Everyone in there was of different abilities and many like me, who were yet to pick up the steps.
I was particularly a fan of the music, it was upbeat and I was able to sing along throughout the session, which if you ask me, is always a great way to keep your mind off what you are really doing. What really impressed me was the relationship Tamara had with all my Zumba buddies; there was not a second where Tamara wasn’t either giving direction or encouragement.
Before I knew it, the end of the session was upon us and I must admit I had been given a fantastic workout. Although everyone was dripping in sweat and out of breath, looking around the room, one thing was very clear to see .....that everyone still had a smile on their faces.
Once the session had finished I was pleasantly surprised just how thoroughly I had enjoyed the session and I will definitely be going again!! Zumba has given me a lot more mobility in my joints especially my hips, improved my rhythm, confidence and feel good factor that I get at the end of each class having had the class sing, cheer, clap, laugh and smile. So all those looking to get out and about, visit Dominic Barberi Hall.
