Oxford is a beautiful city that has been a source of inspiration for many artists and writers. At the Sarah Wiseman Gallery this September we are celebrating the City with an exhibition about Oxford by artists Alison Pullen, David Atkins and David Rhys Jones. What is unique about this exhibition is that none of these artists live here, we have selected them for their artistic flair and style, inviting them to come to the city and respond to its beauty and energy.

The results are amazing; all three artists have won major UK awards for their work and have bought their unique artistic vision to bear on the city.

Alison Pullen is famous for her paintings of interiors, using an ingenious method of painting on top of a photographic collage to create an incredible multilayered image. For the exhibition she has been working at the Bodleian Library and colleges throughout the year, producing paintings that communicate the majesty and history of the interiors of these world famous buildings. In the past Alison has worked in many famous buildings including Buckingham Palace and the V & A.

David Atkins has been championed from college by the art critic Brian Sewell, he established his career with his landscape paintings however in recent years he has turned his attention to the cities, with trips to Venice, New York and closer to home Oxford and London. This exhibition will be his second collection of paintings of Oxford. The first collection exhibited in 2009 was of the city in winter with dark rainy skies punctuated with occasional golden sunlight. He loved the city so much that he was delighted to be painting here over this summer; with a strong focus on the river at Magdalen Bridge making this collection is a real celebration of the city enjoying the summer.

David Rhys Jones is one of this years joint winners of the 2010 Jerwood Applied Art Prize, his photographic work on ceramics are a form of social documentary that record a mix of cultures and architecture found in modern day cities. His work is based on journeys and he has explored the city with great vigour walking around looking for the quirky and unique, things that make Oxford, Oxford. The collection is a great success and these ceramic wall pieces are sure to be highly collectable.
