An animated buzz greeted us as we stepped into Wagamama, a Japanese inspired restaurant located just beside the historical Covered Market. Its open and friendly atmosphere attracts hungry flocks from every age group and it did not fail to work its charm on us too. Sparingly yet elegantly spaced with tables set closely to one another, the room exudes an air of open luminescence.
Once inside, we were welcomed and swiftly led to our table by one of the efficient team members. Then it came to the difficult part of our experience: the agony of choice! The clearly laid-out menu includes an excellent glossary with helpful information for allergy sufferers and for vegetarians. Wagamama concentrates mainly on serving savoury dishes from traditional Japanese cuisine – a welcome refreshment during a time in which a 'Japanese Kitchen' is often regarded as a synonym of Sushi and Sashimi.
After a considerable period, wavering between numerous mouth-watering options and becoming hypnotised by the stream of wholesome, freshly prepared but speedily delivered food escaping nearby us via the kitchen (each dish is served as soon as it is cooked to ensure freshness), we finally decided on our dishes.
Soon we found ourselves in front of generous portions of delicious, delicately presented food. The fact that even vegetarians can dine exquisitely here was instantly proven by the Yasai Katsu Curry - an aromatic curry-rice accompanied by crispy aubergine and butternut squash medallions embellished in breadcrumbs - and steamy Edamame as side-dish, the freshness of which was instantly noticeable. But carnivores don't miss out either: The spicy Chilli Squid side-dish is a must for seafood-lovers and the Ginger Chicken Udon (Japanese egg-free noodles with chicken, beansprouts, egg and onions, spiced with chilli, ginger and coriander) turned out to be just as tasty as the rest.
Despite already being more than full after the main course and side dishes, the price-performance ratio (which can hardly be surpassed) meant that we were unable to resist the dessert menu's lure. Our temptations lead us to a creamy Coconut Reika ice-cream topped with passionfruit coulis to crest a thoroughly enjoyable meal.
We found that Wagamama not only offers delicious meals for agreeable prices but also provides a first-class service in a friendly environment - a rare combination! Plus they have an extensive kids menu (complete with activities to keep kids entertained) as well as offering take-out too! Unsurprisingly, the one thought flashing through our minds as we stepped back out on to the street was: we must return, soon!
