Nestled in the small village of Appleton, less than 6 miles outside of Oxford, lies a quaint country pub with a difference. The Plough Inn has a traditional, welcoming frontage, but what hides behind is a contemporary meets cosy interior, with a restaurant that boasts an impressive menu of fresh meat and fish, all sourced from local suppliers.
On arrival we were greeted warmly by Sophie at the bar, which was laden with an impressive array of ales, lagers and wine, from which we chose a fruity Tempranillo. We were immediately made to feel right home and were seated by the window with a lovely view out into the beer garden. Looking through the menu, from the halloumi cheese kebabs for the vegetarians to succulent scallops or the rack of lamb, it was hard not to try everything!
Between us we settled on the 10oz fillet steak, the halloumi cheese kebabs and also couldn’t quite resist adding a side of prawns to our feast. We certainly weren’t disappointed as the ample portions, which all come with julienne fries, Greek salad and rustic bread were placed in front of us, enticingly sizzling away on the hot volcanic rock plate that all of the main courses are served on. This unique way of serving your food definitely makes the meal more enjoyable, as it enables you to cook your food just the way you like it, lends itself to sharing (which means you get to try even more!) and it’s also lots of fun!
Everything was delicious, and certainly filling which left very little room for dessert, but a quick look through the delectable pudding selection meant they were too hard to resist! After lots of deliberation we plumped for the classic, sticky toffee pudding, and we certainly weren’t disappointed; it was gooey deliciousness topped off perfectly with a blob of vanilla ice cream, and we polished off the lot!
The Plough Inn is a little gem of a pub hidden away in the Oxfordshire countryside, but once you’ve found it, you’ll definitely want to go back again and again.
