Traditional English Pub meets Authentic Thai Kitchen!
If you haven’t heard of The Old Tom Pub yet, you’re clearly missing out. If you like to go for a pint before you head to a restaurant, then this is the place that combines both perfectly. Based right in the city centre on St Aldate’s, The Old Tom is easy to reach and the look of the old traditional building fits in well with the beautiful Christ Church College across the street.
The traditional interior of the pub is cosy with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. When we arrived, our table was ready for us and we sat down to study the menu. We knew that the food they serve is Thai, but we were surprised to find such a nice selection of dishes. The menu is not big, but there is certainly something for everyone’s taste. The drinks menu offers a good choice of English cask ales, draught beers and ciders, spirits and soft drinks.
We both wanted a starter with prawns, so I went for Prawn Tempura and my guest chose Prawn Tom Yum soup. We did not have to wait long for the starters to arrive, nicely presented and very tasty.
All mains are available with vegetables, tofu, pork, chicken, beef, or prawn, however we both decided for beef. My guest decided for a traditional Thai red curry and I went for Pad Priew Wan – beef stir fried with home-made sweet&sour sauce, pineapple, tomatoes, onions and peppers. Our dishes were served with steamed Thai Jasmine Rice, but there are also dishes with fried rice or noodles available. As my dish did not have any chilli in it, I had asked if they could spice it up a bit for me, which they did to perfection.
Soon after we had finished our starters the table was cleared and our mains arrived. Both were nicely presented and looked really tasty. We both very much enjoyed our meals and finished every bit of them!
If you prefer more traditional English pub food, this is also well served for with a choice of soups, fish & chips, pork ribs and more. The pub is also open for lunch with a selection of Thai dishes all @ £6.50.
Altogether, we had a very pleasant time at The Old Tom, with friendly and attentive service, and really great Thai food, all in the enjoyable surrounding of a traditional pub. We will definitely go again! |
