Set upon a hilltop in 170 acres of Oxfordshire countryside just outside the village of Horton-Cum-Studley lays a hidden gem. Amidst the spectacular views, mature woods and beautiful landscape, is a challenging course that will appeal to both the beginner and more experienced golfer.
Great care has been taken with each of the 18 holes to ensure that it is distinctive and interesting. Some of the fairways and greens appear deceptively easy and can trap the unwary. Others seem tough when teeing off but are in fact more forgiving. The 13 lakes, considerable ground vegetation and abundance of mature oak trees form natural hazards that will provide a real test for any golfer. Club selection and a clear strategy for dealing with the challenges of each hole are vital for smooth progress!! The course comprises two loops of nine holes that are laid out in opposite directions around a 30-acre wood, numerous lakes and mature trees. The tees and greens meet USGA specifications and the irrigation system is fully computerised, and as a result, the condition of the course is immaculate.
Three holes merit special mention. The stunning view from the 18th is reward enough for soldiering on through to the end. The vista opens up all the way to the Club House and beyond. Much has been said of the course and when you stand at the 18th tee and survey all that is before you, you can see why. The Club’s signature hole is the 15th, which has one of the more difficult fairways and trickiest greens. Holding your line on the fairway as you tee off is not easy, and you are then faced with a longish second shot uphill. My favourite is the 8th which although is only a Par 3 at 153 yards, it is surrounded by water. Steeling your nerve and keeping it simple (and safe) often is the best solution. The fairway tempts you into taking a more cavalier approach, often with expensive and wet consequences!
With the change of ownership and management earlier this year, Studley Wood has grown from strength to strength. The Club House has been revamped with an enlarged dining and recreational area. The upstairs function room, which caters for parties of up to 70, has also been refurbished. The beautiful blend of wooden floors and tastefully coloured carpets present a warm and inviting welcome. The food on offer at lunch includes sandwiches and cooked meals. The members are friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming. Clearly the recent changes have been well received, and there is a real sense of excitement of where the Club is heading. Studley Wood is probably the best golf course in Oxfordshire, and as picturesque and pleasant as any course you will play in this region.
