On Monday 9 March at 10am, Science Oxford Live re-opened its doors after a couple of months of refurbishment. Where once there was a contemporary styled ground floor centre for grown-ups, with a tucked away children’s gallery upstairs, you will now find an immersive world of entertainment and education where science is in everything.
The designers have clearly tried in re-vamping the centre to build on the past years of operation, improving the visitors’ experience and creating a welcoming venue where all areas and audiences are inter-connected.
Considering the time constraints and the fact that the overall building is far from pleasing to the eye, the designers have achieved a great deal. On the ground floor is a meet and greet area, a chill out refreshment zone and a permanent exhibition for adults and older children on the Science in Oxford. Science Oxford Live also features a regular series of events for adults and families taking place on the first floor.
For children and their families, there is an investigation area to experience science first-hand with equipment that allows you to send secret whisper messages across the room or colour your shadow. All the activities are hands-on and they encourage you to explore science by playing.
Science Oxford Live demonstrates the links between the processes of science and the application made by Oxfordshire businesses, both within the exhibits and through its events. This is a unique take on how a science centre can make connections between its communities.
Science Oxford Live is the second stage in a journey to something bigger – a major cultural centre for science and enterprise in the heart of Oxford city. Let’s get involved and shape up the future.
