It was a lovely warm summer’s day, the perfect day to take our four-year-old triplets out to lunch at The Red Lion in Wolvercote.
We arrived just before 12 noon, and there was plenty of parking in the private car park. Tables and chairs were all set out in the large garden with parasols to provide shade, great for our little ones. We went into the pub where the landlady greeted us and offered us drinks, and we chose to sit outside to enjoy the sunshine. The children played in the large fenced garden; and had great fun on the bouncy castle.
We chose a different meal each from the extensive menu and sat in what I would describe as a very traditional dining area, spacious, clean and comfortable. The food was really good “pub grub” and the portions were definitely not going to leave you hungry, as one of my daughters kindly pointed out. The pricing was very reasonable, and the presentation was perfect: clean plates, clean cutlery, and lovely food.
The staff were very pleasant, and whilst they were attentive, they were not intrusive.
The pub aims itself at families with young children, and there is a small play park directly opposite the pub that the children were looking at longingly. It would be worth considering having a good old play before you go for lunch.
If you are looking for a hearty meal that doesn’t break the bank, The Red Lion is a fine option. Great location just off the Wolvercote Roundabout, plenty of on-site parking, reasonable pricing, a large choice, generous portions and clean and tidy. Recommended!
