To be honest, this was not my first visit to Qumins. In fact, I’ve lost count of the number of wonderful evenings I have spent there with my family and friends. When I was asked to review of one of my favourite restaurants in Oxford, I jumped at the chance!
Qumins is not your average Indian restaurant. Here you will find modern, innovative dishes, served in style. The décor is cool and contemporary, the atmosphere friendly and relaxed. If you are a serious “Foodie”, this restaurant ticks all the boxes.
Mark and I arrived on a busy Friday night. Ali greeted us with his usual warm welcome and showed us to our table. We ordered drinks and browsed through the extensive menu. Here you will find something for every palate, including an outstanding choice of fish and seafood specialities, vegetarian options and the much loved traditional curries. The sizzling Tandoori dishes are a must!
Our drinks arrived together with a dish of warm of poppadoms, accompanied by a generous selection of chutneys and pickles. We were grateful Ali was on hand to guide us through the menu and after much deliberation I chose the Chicken Tikka, with a yoghurt and mint dressing. Mark began with the Shami Kebab, a spiced minced lamb burger. Both were light and tasty, leaving us eager for the next course!
Ali suggested that we have the Jumbo Prawn Shashlick to follow. A sizzling dish of enormous prawns marinated in Masala with peppers, onions and tomatoes. This spectacular dish arrived at our table filling the air with mouth-watering aromas. We also shared a Mohilli fish curry, succulent pieces of Sea Bass in a delicately spiced coconut milk. This came accompanied with Saag Rice, Garlic Nan bread and a side dish of Okra, all very fresh and perfectly cooked. A winning combination thanks to Ali`s recommendations!
The chefs at Qumins pride themselves on producing highly flavoursome dishes without the heaviness sometimes associated with Indian cuisine. Luckily for us, we still had room for dessert! I chose a refreshing blackcurrant sorbet, while Mark had the Indian Pistachio ice cream; both were delicious and beautifully presented.
To accompany our dinner we had chosen a bottle of South African Chenin Blanc. This refreshing New World wine complemented the bold flavours of the food.
We finished the evening with coffee. Not just any ordinary coffee! This was the best cappuccino I had tasted in a long while. A perfect end to a perfect evening….
We had eaten like kings. As usual, Ali and his staff had excelled themselves.
