Qumins, located at St. Clements, offers superb Indian cuisine and first class service and is perfectly situated just outside of the City Centre. Before my visit, I had heard so many good things about this award-winning restaurant, and now I was going to get a chance to have a taste for myself.
The modern decor and fantastically dimmed mood lighting created a tasteful and stylish atmosphere for all to enjoy. It becomes clear as soon as you walk through the doors that Ali, the owner, takes great pride in the appearance of this fine establishment, with the neatly fanned serviettes and pristine wine glasses delicately placed.
Upon our arrival, we were shown to our seats by the courteous and attentive staff. As we settled, we realised that although it was only 7 on a Thursday evening, and a time in the year when the students weren’t in town , Qumins was still fairly busy.
The menu is extensive and well-rounded, and as we were quite overwhelmed by the choice, Ali stepped in to throw a few suggestions our way. We eventually came to a decisio. To start we had the Popadums accompanied by an amazingly diverse and colourful selection of sauces, made from original recipes and created on the premises using specialist skills and ingredients, my personal favourite being Mango Chutney.
Secondly came our starters. I had Meat Samosas, which were wonderfully spicy and my guest had the King Prawns which were cooked in spices, herbs and served with Puri bread. Once we had devoured our starters, it didn’t take long for our mains to follow. Everything was so well presented and I must admit it smelt sooo good...I couldn’t wait to dive in. My partner had the Chicken Rogan, a curry cooked in tomato purée, garlic and special Kashmiri masata – very well spiced and topped with sautéed tomato. I, on the other hand, cowered away from the spicy curry’s and went for the traditional Chicken Korma, cooked in a rich almond coconut gravy and finished with fresh cream. This is for those with a more delicate pallet.
We had Special Rice, which was light, delicate and cooked to perfection, along with a decent portion of garlic Naan Bread. The presentation of the food was excellent, obviously created with care and precision, and the staff were consistently attentive between courses.
To finish, Ali persuaded us to try some Indian tea, a completely new concept to both my guest and I. When served, you immediately smell the cinnamon, the plant extracts, and all the secret ingredients this drink includes. I must admit for those milky tea drinkers out there this isn’t the drink for you; however, for those adventurous types this is a must try; with the perfect concoction of ingredients with the purest of flavours, the perfect way to finish a meal.
We had a delightful evening at Qumins and I highly recommend visiting this stylish and attractive restaurant with wonderful quality cuisine and staff. It’s the perfect destination for couples, families or parties of friends, whether you’re celebrating a special event or just looking for an upmarket dining experience. There’s a lovely atmosphere, the prices are reasonable and I can’t fault the service. I am already planning my next visit!!!
