Last year I brought my family along to enjoy an afternoon outing in July to Las Iguanas, a cool, relaxed riverside restaurant in the heart of Oxford. This time, the kids were really looking forward to it as they knew how good it was. Ed still “seriously loved it” and Abi couldn’t wait to order the curly fries again this year.
Now well established in Oxford, the Latin American restaurant, located on Park End Street less than half a mile from Oxford Castle, has secured itself a reputation for greatfood, excellent customer service and a fresh, upbeat environment. The family friendliness may be a concern if you don’t like kids dancing at the tables; but in my opinion, as long as they’re not dancing ON the tables, let them go with it. Mine were happy as clams with their free Las Iguanas t-shirts, loving every minute of it.
We were expertly attended to by General Manager RK and his staff and couldn’t
fault the atmosphere, food or service. I had my 2 for 1 Lime Coolers to keep
me relaxed – I can’t say ‘cool’, the kids wouldn’t allow the pun – and Tina was
content with her Pimms. Abi had her usual lemonade and Ed polished off a non-alcoholic
Raspberry Cooler quick fast.
The food arrived promptly – Abi taking great delight in parading her deep fried squid around the table and Ed launching into his mountain of nachos. I went for the Pato Taquito to start – essentially duck pancakes - whilst Tina tackled the yellowfin tuna ceviche, which she assured me was superb.
The kids, quite predictably, went for the chili con carne with curly fries and warm tortilla wraps, whilst I couldn’t ask for anything else but the Gourmet Chicken Fajitas, which tempted me last year and were too good to miss a second time round. Served in a sizzling dish with green peppers and onions, this really is a dish to relish, with a generous selection of guacamole, salsa and sour cream or green chilies to addto the succulent strips of chicken. Tina chose the paella, which was cooked to perfection and boasted prawns, chicken and delicious rice, all served in a steaming hot dish.
Yes, I fell into the banoffi pie trap again, but it was a fall worth taking, and Ed surprisedus all with his choice of a refreshing ice cold lemon sorbet – maybe he’s getting refined at the ripe old age of 12!
Again we had been spoilt, and in the most part, we had repeated much of what we had before. But isn’t that what tempts you back to a restaurant? We all have our favourites, and there’s nothing wrong with going back to experience the same delight.
In the case of Las Iguanas, going back wasn’t the same as last time……..it was even better.
Las Iguanas – a family restaurant even more perfect than it was just a year ago!
