| Heroes Sandwich Bar |

The sun was out and so were the shoppers when I found myself meandering down Ship Street in search of Heroes. While tourists and locals milled up and down busy Cornmarket, I settled in barely a hundred metres away for a quiet, peaceful lunch.
Though it has only been open since November, Heroes is quickly developing a reputation around town for their hot sandwiches. At the suggestion of Kate, who owns and runs the cafe with her husband Hamid, I ordered a Mexican Chicken Panini. It’s a hard choice – the menu is extensive and constantly changing to bring in seasonal foods and customer suggestions. On top of that, you can build your own baguette (or ciabatta) with any of their ingredients.
There are no less than ten vegetarian sandwiches on the menu, not to mention the innumerable options of build-you-own baguette. Meatlovers won’t be disappointed either with the selection of honey roast ham, bacon, sausage, roast beef, chorizo, salami, pastrami, and smoked salmon.
If you’re hard up for inspiration, you can try a sandwich from the menu. The Mexican Chicken Panini, which I ordered, is a spicy Southwestern mix of chicken, mayonnaise, and salsa, topped off with onion, mozzarella, and cheddar. For people wanting to stick with that international flavour, there’s also the Espanole, which is much the same but with chorizo. I also saw several people get the Swiss Chicken Panini, which is complimented by mayonnaise on one side, a rich mustard on the other, and lots of emmental in between. They don’t skimp on the stuffing either. Every sandwich and jacket potato that came out of the kitchen was filled to spilling with meats and cheeses and veg.
But let’s be clear about something – Heores isn’t just a sandwich shop. Sure, they have all the trimmings with fresh fruit, Kettle crisps, coffees, and juice drinks. However, there’s another side to the menu, which includes new summer salads, all-day breakfast, jacket potatoes, soups, and homemade cakes. Soon they plan to introduce ice cream and milkshakes. They even offer catering and picnic hampers.
It’s also great for kids, especially those picky eaters. Cheese Panini? No problem. Beans on toast? Coming right up. Renovations will also be completed in the coming months, updating the decor to something more shabby chic and even installing a dining space in the back garden.
Heroes is truly a shopper’s sanctuary on Ship Street. I’d recommend repeat visits, especially as they update their menu for summer and the refurbishment will be another excuse to go back!
