Oxford is privileged to have an award-winning seafood restaurant, one with food so delicious it was voted in the top 10 of the Best Fish Restaurant in the UK by “The Times”. Now, it is worth noting that I have not been a lover of fish in the past, but was assured by my partner and dining companion that if it is fresh and cooked correctly, it shouldn’t really taste ‘fishy’ at all. So, a seafood connoisseur and a newbie set out to try Fishers’ fare.
Upon walking into the restaurant, I was struck by how casual yet refined the decor was, and how everyone at each table seemed to be enjoying themselves. We were seated by our courteous server at a romantic table in a corner, by a window with a view onto St Clements. We decided on one of the recommended wines, the Chenin Blanc Vin de Pays du Jardin, which was perfect, not too sweet or too dry.
For our starters, we chose deep fried squid with dill mayonnaise and king scallops grilled with coriander & shallot butter. Both were absolutely beautiful; the scallops were succulent and flavourful, and the squid was not rubbery at all and complemented very well by the piquant dill mayonnaise.
The mains were just as delicious if not more so! I went with the char-grilled swordfish steak with roast pear. The swordfish had a delightful, meaty texture that went well with the sweet softness of the roast pears in their red wine reduction sauce. I surprised myself by also loving my companion’s choice, a whole grilled Dover sole with a caper sauce. It managed to be both moist and firm, with a delicate and almost sweet flavour. We each had chips to accompany our mains as well, which were golden and chunky. No detail was left unattended to!
Although we were both quite full, it seemed a shame not to share a dessert. Each item on the dessert menu seemed equally sinful, but we finally decided on the Vaspretto, a special to Fishers. Presented in a martini glass, it consists of amaretto and espresso poured over vanilla pod ice cream. It was the perfect end to our meal.
Now that I have been successfully converted to loving seafood, I will be sure to take advantage of having Fishers so close by. They offer a two-course express lunch for just £5 per person, and a lunch/early dining menu with two courses for £8.50. I will make sure to book to avoid disappointment, as they are very popular!
