After arriving at the Duke of Marlborough around 8 after a challenging journey through the snow, we were greeted by extremely friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. Sadly the pub was quiet due to the weather, yet the two regulars who had managed to make it assured us that on a normal night the pub would be full.
The first thing that struck us both was the diverse selection of the menu, both with mains and starters offering fish, meat and vegetarian options. It was also nice to hear that people on a celiac diet are catered for, not just out of necessity, but with a genuine desire to please, there are several options on offer for them, something that can be found lacking in other establishments.
We ordered mussels and the pate to start. The mussels came in a white wine and cream sauce and we both agreed that they were absolutely exquisitely prepared, with Charles going as far to say they were the best he had ever had, and as he has lived in Spain this is not a light compliment. The pate was also presented brilliantly, although the portion was slightly lacking, something that could also be said of the mussels, yet the flavour more than made up for this.
For the main we had Beef Marlborough medallions and the Venison Puff Pastry; it’s easy to see why this pub has a reputation for its meat. The beef medallions were cooked to perfection and practically melted in the mouth, the sauce, a mixture of stilton and bacon took the taste levels to the max without over powering the beef. The Venison puff pastry with cream mash was also a delight; the wonderful taste of game came through perfectly without being smothered by sauce. The chocolate brownie, sorbet and cheese board to finish were the perfect end to the meal.
The Duke of Marlborough is the perfect compromise between a restaurant meal and a local pub, not only does it provide delicious food, the prices are very realistic, whether you are treating your partner, or the whole family. It also caters for large parties, with a private dining area. All in all, we were both extremely satisfied with the quality of the meal and the overall atmosphere of the place, and we will definitely be returning in the near future.
