Situated in the heart of Oxford lies a little secret! The Corner Club, owned by A Curious Group of Hotels (ACGH) and located on the corner of Turl Street and Ship Street just off Broad Street, is Oxford’s newest private members’ club. The ground floor of the building is currently being refurbished into a lovely restaurant and bar open to everyone, so watch this space!
The Corner Club consists of a bar, restaurant, lounge area and two meeting rooms - all with fantastic views over Oxford. Stairs lead you up to the exclusive members’ club on two and a half floors, all decorated in very modern and stylish furnishings with gorgeous relaxing chairs, beautiful rugs and a very homely environment. The bar is very chic, trendy and interesting with comfortable sofas ideal for meeting friends and colleagues for a cocktail. The Club restaurant is spread between two powder-blue rooms, and offers a snack menu, dinner menu and specials of the day, with two courses for £12.95. The food is organic, the menu seasonal and the specials vary every day, so there’s plenty of choice. The restaurant had an informal atmosphere and the food was delicious. We had homemade tomato soup, crumbly deep fried monkfish, crispy salads (made to order) and goat’s cheese risotto, all light, fresh and tasty. The wine list was refreshingly different (as is the case at all ACGH establishments).
Upstairs was my favourite space: a lovely club lounge with lots of nooks and crannies for chatting, a log fire, even a little library area – it’s hard to believe you are in the middle of Oxford as you feel somewhere completely apart! Two meeting rooms are here also, The Turl Room and The Ship Room, with plush carpets and the latest technology. The Ship Room on the top floor is smaller, for a more intimate meeting. The Turl Room is much more flexible, fitting up to 40 delegates theatre-style down to 16 for a boardroom meeting, and is suitable for anything from a private meeting, dinner or cocktail party, to a presentation with PowerPoint. It is fully-equipped with a 42” flat screen and a projector screen, electronic whiteboard, and Internet connections. The Corner Club offers Delegate rates from the hour to the day, so they are completely flexible for your needs.
I loved the wooden floors, and I enjoyed the whole atmosphere of The Corner Club - it had charm but also had lots of quirkiness (like some amazing Curious Group paint colours!) and it was a peaceful and tranquil escape from a busy, hot sunny afternoon in Oxford, a quiet haven in which to unwind that is definitely worth a visit!
