The things that you don’t know about the City that you live in, well, you will find them out on this bus tour with a little added humour to boot!
Will it rain or will it not? Slightly hesitant in our balmy climate, we walked to the station to embark on our open-top bus tour by City Sightseeing. We collected our tickets and were directed to the relevant stop. There are two types of buses, one that has a taped commentary and one with a live guide. We went for the live guide. First on, we went to the back in true childish fashion and plugged in before take off!
This really is the only way to see Oxford; the views are amazing, being able to peek into the colleges with their immaculate lawns and centuries-old charm. Let’s face it, we all love to gossip, so finding out who went to which college was completely fascinating to me: from royalty and actors to world leaders, they have all studied at Oxford. It made me very proud to live here hearing all the life-changing events that have been initiated right here in little old Oxford. I drive around the City all day long and take for granted the architecture. If this is the only reason you do this tour then I can think of no better. We live in a beautiful City that is even more beautiful from 30 feet up.
I’d always wondered why there is an Alice in Wonderland shop located quite a long way from the High Street; now that I know that the original sweet shop found there was CS Lewis’s inspiration for the old sheepshop in Alice Through the Looking-Glass, and so it would be a travesty for it to move. I loved hearing the history of the grand houses in Central North Oxford, too. Apparently the Oxford University college dons were originally not allowed to marry, and as when this changed the only way to snap up an eligible lady was to have a house, it’s not surprisingly the houses all went up fairly
quickly!
You can pop on and off the bus all day, so it’s easy to “do” Oxford in a day. With your ticket there are lots of discounts in shops and restaurants to make the day even cheaper. This is a great day out for all the family. It was great to do the tourist thing and see people from around the world enjoying this beautiful City.
Thank you to City Sightseeing.
