If you're looking for somewhere that is a little bit different and slightly off the beaten track then why not head down to the Cherwell Boathouse. This hidden gem is set behind the infamous Dragon School in North Oxford, overlooking the tranquil setting of the River Cherwell.
The Boathouse is a charming restaurant with a quintessential English feel and a clientele and ambience befitting a university town. Its rustic charm and informal surroundings, mixed with a modern, diverse menu, make this restaurant shine out as the perfect choice for all age groups.
A small bar area for pre-dinner drinks boasts good local ales including the famous Hook Norton ale, and there's an extensive wine list suitable for both novices and experts alike. The wines, which come from all over the world, are of a high quality. We chose a reasonably priced Rioja, which suggested that some of the more expensive wines from the cellar must have been extremely good (some priced at more then £250). Those with the most discerning and expensive palate would not be disappointed.
The menu, whilst not providing an exhaustive choice, is very obviously aimed at accommodating seasonal produce, with a balanced choice across all food types, including fish, red meat and some interesting game dishes. A range of modern British and French cuisine is served in an interesting way with intriguing twists to the fusion of ingredients. The vegetarian options were well thought out and unique - not at all the usual boring afterthought of most restaurants. The presentation of the dishes was executed to a very high standard. The meal was one of the best I have had in a long time, complemented by the attentive staff, who are welcoming and have a relaxed yet informed approach.
With a set menu option as well as a la carte, the Boathouse is mindful of a range of financial budgets, and there is certainly something for all tastes.
Dessert is our favourite part of any meal, and the Boathouse did not disappoint us. With a wide selection of delicious creations it was hard to choose just one - we had four different puddings including chocolate soup, peach tart and carrot brulee. However, my lasting memory of the Boathouse will definitely be the expansive cheese menu, with its hand-picked selection of cheeses and wines. Stinking Bishop washed down with a chilled glass of Chablis overlooking the river - now that's a perfect summer's evening!
