Browns in Oxford was the second of this famous group of restaurants to open in 1976. Standing proudly, and rightfully so, being one of the finest restaurants Oxfordshire has to offer, Browns cannot go unnoticed. Stylish branded awnings line the front of the restaurant while a tall stretch of windows beneath entices and invites walkers by to get a glimpse and taste of what Browns has to offer.
The decor is striking. Wooden floors throughout, with rich wood and chocolate brown furnishings, maintaining an inviting traditional yet
modern feel, complimented by soft lighting and wonderfully huge plants. Candlelit tables create privacy and intimacy for diners whilst still retaining the buzz of Browns - people laughing and talking, glasses clinking and chinking - but never overpowering or loud. Parties include families of all ages, couples and group parties, all filling the room with vivaciousness and enjoyment.
Led to our table by an exceedingly charming waiter, we were seated close to the window frontage. Our drinks were served as we pondered over the tasteful menu and chalk board specials, as we relaxed and gazed out of the gleaming window at the passersby, quite evidently green with envy!
The pan fried tiger prawns to start looked amazing, generous in serving and perfect to share before our main. Delicious either alone or with the tomato, chilli, garlic and olive dressing, giving the prawns an added tasty tang.
The grilled salmon followed, sitting proudly on a bed of warm cannelloni, flageolet and French bean salad accompanied by courgettes, parsley and red onion. The salmon was perfectly pink, succulent and delectable. The wine recommend by our knowledgeable waiter did not fail to disappoint. A fine choice from the specials board, the roasted duck chosen by my guest looked fantastic. Perfectly tender, drizzled in an orange zesty sauce, served with soft fluffy mash, complimented by a side order of creamed spinach.
With little room for pudding, we still failed to resist the appetising desert menu. The profiteroles looked ridiculously naughty, perfectly stacked on my plate with a generous helping of rich hot chocolate sauce. The combination of hot sauce and cold pudding was delicious.
My guest was not shy and had no trouble finishing the baked vanilla cheesecake. Fresh and full of flavour mixed with a soft biscuit base, finished nicely with freshly blended strawberries, the cheesecake also ranked highly on the naughty list!
Browns fulfilled beyond my expectations. The service throughout was flawless. The food was simple, traditional and divine. With a
restaurant so embedded in the fabric of a City as Browns is in Oxford, it will take a monumental disaster to ever knock Browns off its perch as arguable one of Oxford’s best restaurants.
