Bangladeshi and Indian Cuisine
The Bayleaf restaurant offers superb Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine and is well worth the trip to Eynsham, a pretty village a few miles outside of Oxford.
The building sits comfortably amongst quaint cottages and is easy to find with nearby parking available. First impressions on entering are excellent as the staff are friendly and welcoming, and even on a Tuesday night the restaurant was reasonably busy.
The crisp white tablecloths are a tasteful and stylish foundation for contemporary crockery, neatly fanned serviettes, pristine wine glasses and a single red rose. Wooden panelling and an impressive fireplace stunningly occupy one wall, and the magnolia walls are subtly complemented by large mirrors and slender bamboo decorations.
The polite and attentive staff showed us to our table, and as we settled into our seats the pleasant hum of conversation and unobtrusive ethnic music created a lovely ambience.
The menu is extensive and well-rounded, and as we were quite overwhelmed by choice, the manager was happy to offer us his recommendations. Firstly we had the Padums accompanied by an amazingly diverse and colourful selection of pickles, made from original recipes and created on the premises using specialist skills.
Secondly came the crisp and delicious Onion Bhajis, followed by our recommended main courses. My companion had the Murgh-e-Chilli Lahori, a medium-to-hot chicken curry which arrived sizzling hot. Being a vegetarian with a preference for creamy dishes, I had the Sak Paneer, with the Mushroom Bhaji as a complementary side dish.
We had Pilau Rice which was light, delicate and cooked to perfection, along with a decent portion of garlic Naan Bread. The presentation of the food was excellent, obviously created with care and precision, and the staff were consistently attentive between courses.
We had a delightful evening at The Bayleaf and I highly recommend visiting this stylish and attractive restaurant with wonderful quality cuisine and staff.
It’s the perfect destination for couples, families or parties of friends, whether you’re celebrating a special event or just looking for an upmarket dining experience.
There’s a lovely atmosphere, the prices are reasonable and I can’t fault the service.
