I consider myself very lucky to live in Oxford, one of the most attractive cities in the country. Although, I have to confess, I am guilty of occassionaly taking this historic city for granted. Having just enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Aziz Pandesia, over looking the picturesque river Thames, I have been reminded of just how fortunate I am!
A short five minute stroll from the bustling city centre, you will find yourself at Folly bridge, one of Oxford’s most tranquil riverside locations. Here, sitting magnificently beside the bridge, you will discover a unique Oxford dining experience.
Aziz Pandesia opened its doors in 2006, sister restaurant to the legendary Aziz on the Cowley Road. This elegant award winning restaurant and bar serves exceptional Indian and Thai cuisine, together with speciality cocktails and drinks, all of which can be enjoyed on the pontoon during the summer months. This is the perfect place to unwind and relax away from the crowded city.
As we walked over the bridge we could see the pontoon, the tables set ready for lunch with crisp white linen, gleaming in the sun. It was a sight you’d expect to see on the Riviera. My first thought was why hadn’t I been here before?
Lunchtime at Aziz Pandesia can be a quick affair, for those in a hurry there is an express lunch menu, but luckily we were able to linger over a more relaxed lunch, enjoying the sunshine and peaceful setting as we sipped our freshly made cocktails and admired the stunning views.
We were greeted by Aziz himself and his eldest son Abdul, who manages Pandesia. Both share an enormous passion for what they do and were delightful hosts.
Aziz suggested we sample dishes from both the Thai and Indian menu. To begin, we had a selection of mixed starters, including Thai fish cakes, prawn toast and succulent chicken tikka, all of which were deliciously fresh and light. For main course the chef had prepared stir-fried tiger prawns with mixed vegetables in oyster sauce, and a Pandesia speciality, Abgani, a chicken curry with cashew nuts in a light cream sauce. Once again, it was all beautifully cooked and attractively presented. Aziz recommended a fresh, light Australian semillon chardonnay to accompany our lunch.
You may be thinking that all this comes at a premium, but in fact you’d be wrong, since both the food and drinks menu are very reasonably priced at this elegant establishment.
Aziz Pandesia boasts an enviable position on the river, so whatever the occasion, a long lunch with friends, a romantic candlelight dinner for two or just a few drinks after a busy day at work, you won’t find a more idyllic places in Oxford – but don’t tell everyone!
