At Thai, located overlooking the High Street in the centre of Oxford, is a hidden gem, a wonderful surprise and an oasis of tranquility, all in one. The décor is modern yet comfortable, with wooden floors and attractive Thai art adorning the crisp white walls.
Furnishings were of excellent quality – a careful and considered eye had obviously designed the restaurant to its full potential. When full, I imagine At Thai must be a thriving, vibrant and endlessly fun place to be.
Greeted by genuine warmth, we ventured into At Thai late one Friday night, when it would have been forgivable for service standards to drop, for beaming smiles to ebb and for the quality of food to dip. Far from it. We experienced first class hospitality, attentive and more than capable service and beautiful food from the courteous staff.
At Thai cooks meals fresh using natural and traditional herbs and spices with a tremendous amount of passion and care put into each dish. The chefs can cook to order, satisfying any level of hot or spicy tastes. And the presentation of each dish is an art form in itself, not that carefully constructed garnishing ever prevented me from tucking in!
We shared steamed minced chicken & prawns wrapped in pastry and marinated barbecued spare ribs for starters. For our mains, I had the tasty green curry in coconut milk with sliced pepper, bamboo shoots and basil, plus sticky rice. Tina went for the red duck curry. It never ceases to amaze me how a Thai meal can look so petite in a dish but, when let loose, is an absolute feast.
A superb meal, we were pleasantly satisfied.
Value wise, a two course meal for two with drinks would be hard to find for less than £20 per head, plus a deserving gratuity. But At Thai went on giving and we left with another warm smile and a ‘see you soon’. It is a cert we will be back.
