If you need a sanctuary in the heart of Oxford, somewhere to get away from the hustle and bustle, somewhere to unwind, somewhere to switch off...If you are looking for food prepared with a passion, excellent service and tremendous value for money...The Rose is this and more.
With first class food meticulously prepared in house by the most hands-on of owners, Marianne Bruel, The Rose scores- time after time. This is not a conveyor belt of food, no Little Chef. This is not factory prepared, “take it or leave it” food. This is food prepared with love, imagination and pride.
If you want food with standards, come to The Rose, you won’t be disappointed. And if you get the chance, flag Marianne down for a chat while she's up in the eatery from the kitchen. She would love to tell you where the food on your table comes from, how her husband Holger sources only the best each morning and how her clients keep coming back for more. “We take pride in baking our own teacakes, scones and bread on the premises, using organic flour from Dove Farm in Wiltshire.”
My companion Kim and I enjoyed: Scrambled egg and salmon - three gorgeous, bright yellow, fresh eggs mixed with chives and scrambled to order. Served with hot toast, butter and jam and a pot of house tea. For an additional charge of just £2.75, I added slivers of Scotland's finest smoked organic salmon.
Kim plumped for the club sandwich, “as it should be” she assures me! A triple decker of toasted organic bread with layers of lettuce, organic chicken and organic bacon. Served with a crisp side salad and crisps. Kim beams, “Mine was absolutely lovely, best Club Sandwich I’ve had in Oxford and potentially ever. Textures were spot-on, and the accompaniments were the perfect complements to the sandwich.”
For dessert we had the scones and clotted cream with strawberry jam... Two freshly baked scones I must add. These come with the best clotted cream we have come across, surprisingly from the Cotswolds rather than Cornwall. Finally there is a pot of strawberry jam that’s to die for, positively bursting with fruit. “Best scones I’ve ever had, and indeed the clotted cream was better than any I’ve had from Devon.” Kim again!
The menu changes twice a week, so there is always something new to look forward to. They carry beautiful teas and sell preserves homemade by Marianne. You would honestly be hard pushed to find a better place to eat in Oxford.
As soon as you discover this oasis, you won’t want to let go. Marianne is keen to welcome you throughout the day, but urges newcomers to try The Rose for breakfast – it’s a great way to acquaint yourself to The Rose and you can always stay for lunch, and then tea and then breakfast again.
