Al Andalus Tapas Bar on Little Clarendon Street, slightly out of Oxford’s city centre brings a touch of Spain to its famously British surroundings.
On entering, you are immediately transported to Spain, be it not for the weather! The warm mediterranean colours are very inviting, setting the mood. The decor is consistently Spanish, from the paintings on the walls through to the heated outside area, perfect for a summer evening.
My friends and I were welcomed with friendly smiles and shown to our table. Positioned in the window, it was cosy and intimate. Firstly, we ordered a jug of Al Andalus’ classic Sangria which was fruity and addictive (although the extensive regional wine list begs for a return visit.) The waitress thoughtfully offered us a jug of water as well.
Full of anticipation, we opened the menu to a tantalising array of delicious choices. Al Andalus boasts fresh, homemade cooking throughout their selection of cold or hot tapas and variety of paella. After much deliberation we chose 8 tapas dishes, including 2 of their specials, and of course, paella! The waitresses were polite and patient, assuring us they would answer any queries.
The staggered arrival of food brought with it aroma and wide eyes. It was so fresh, especially the special, Gazpacho. The lamb kebab was succulently tender and perfectly cooked alongside the chorizo and cheese skewers which went down a storm with my friends, leading to a second helping! All the while the waitresses attentively replenished our drinks. The attractively presented Paella Mixta followed, which tasted as good as it looked, packed with Spanish flavour. I loved it so much I asked the waitress to box it up! For the vegetarian’s among us, I recommend the Berejenas a la miel from the specials, gorgeously fried aubergines with honey. We finished by sharing a Crema Catalana for dessert, recommended to us by the waitress, who was very right to do so! Alternatively, an impressive display of liquors and coffees could complete this perfect meal.
The owner bought the restaurant in Feb 2008 and has achieved an excellent dining experience, suitable for large groups or quite couples. Cesar De la Fuente, Manager, recommends visiting on a Friday or Saturday night to enjoy the weekly flamenco dancing.
I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at Al Andalus and left feeling content and satisfied but unwilling to leave Spain behind.
