Last night 270 guests attended the inaugural In Oxford Magazine Restaurant Awards in the grounds of Oxford Castle, hosted by Malmaison.
The event was a great success with whoops of joy as restaurants across 8 categories celebrated winning or just enjoying the occasion.
Biggest winners of the night were The Feathered Nest who scooped the top prize of Restaurant of the Year and Best British Restaurant, followed by Pierre Victoire who were ‘victorious’ in the Best European and Public Vote categories – the latter with 488 votes! (over 7,500 votes cast in total).
With thanks to Malmaison, Oxford Castle, the sponsors, guests and suppliers for a great effort. Special mention to New Folium Marquees and Beautiful Chair Covers for making the marquee look stunning, to Tina of TERA events for co-ordinating the event and to Miele for being our Awards Sponsor.

Favourite Oxfordshire Restaurant and Why:
The Old Parsonage – consistent, cosy, wonderful service...scrumptious food.
Favourite restaurant outside of Oxfordshire:
The Standard, in the old meat packing district in New York City. Buzzy, nutty atmosphere, amazing decor and really delicious, simply cooked food. And the oysters are to die for! Love it there.
Most memorable Oxfordshire restaurant experience:
Pizzeria Mama Mia in Summertown when I was 19 and living there (and working in Oxford restaurants) ...long time ago, but fabulous summer’s evening with friends and dodgy wine! Lovely pizza though... still think about it!
What do you hope the Awards will do for Oxfordshire restaurants?
I hope the awards will raise the profile of the – so far - undiscovered restaurants in Oxfordshire. We already know about the wonderful Manoir, which is simply stunning, but there are so many more out there that should be heralded too.

Cherwell Boathouse - the river / Old Parsonage - atmosphere and Jamal's - solid curry.
Favourite restaurant outside of Oxfordshire:
Any Ski restaurants at high altitude = pretentious I realize
Most memorable Oxfordshire restaurant experience:
Aziz phenomenal curry
What do you hope the Awards will do for Oxfordshire restaurants?
Being honest, Oxford's reputation for food is poor - we need the reality of 2011 to shine through.

Favourite Oxfordshire Restaurant and Why:
I don't have a favourite as yet - I have had so many great experiences - it's hard to pick just one!
Favourite restaurant outside of Oxfordshire:
I went to River Cottage last year and this was an amazing experience. The food was fresh, local and exquisite. A real culinary delight!
Most memorable Oxfordshire restaurant experience:
I took my partner to the Randolph for his birthday and I made a cake in what was meant to be "in the shape of a car". It was not the best looking cake ever - my cake making skill leave something to be desired - but the staff decorated the cake with rose petals and they were amazing throughout the night. They say it's the thought that counts and the care and attention the gave us made our night very special
What do you hope the Awards will do for Oxfordshire restaurants?
It's difficult sometimes to know where to go and having the awards helps people around Oxfordshire try new things, which can only be a positive thing for the restaurants who are offering a high quality service and need well deserved exposure.

Favourite restaurant outside of Oxfordshire:
I have two favourites. The Georgian restaurants in Harrods, London - the restaurant is beautiful, the service excellent and at lunchtimes, has a pianist playing. They also offer a buffet menu which offers a vast array of choices and guarantess my teenage boys come away full! / Polpo in Covent Gardens. The food is fabulous and very good value. The atmosphere is great too.

Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons - We went there to celebrate a special anniversary - very romantic!
What do you hope the Awards will do for Oxfordshire restaurants?
I'm sure it will expose some great restaurants that people have yet to discover. I am always interested to read restaurant reviews as these often encourage me to visit somewhere I would not have gone ordinarily. I hope our reviews will encourage others to try somewhere new.

Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons – I won a lunch there in a competition 10 years ago (when I couldn’t have afforded to eat there) and spent the whole afternoon being spoilt – fantastic day and food
What do you hope the Awards will do for Oxfordshire restaurants?
One of the things I love about Oxfordshire is the sheer number of great unique restaurants – we do have chains, but in the City and so many of the towns and villages we have those great ‘finds’ that in my mind you just don’t get everywhere!

L’auberge du Vieux Puits at Fontjoncouse (Aude) –the chef, Gilles Goujon’s signature poached egg ‘pourri’ (rotten egg, I think is the literal translation, but there’s nothing wrong with this dish!) with black truffle infused yolk, his imaginative use of local produce and herbs and for its fabulous cheese chariot. He’s gone up through the gears of stars getting his 3rd Michelin star just last year.
