| The Dixieland All Stars |
|
 |
Friday

of top musicians steeped in the history of the style of
jazz called Dixieland. They play tunes associated with
Louis Armstrong, Eddie Condon, Jack Teagarden, Bix Beiderbecke
and Muggsy Spanier. But not only that, the group also play
pieces from other jazz favourites – all done in their ‘jam

than a concert. They call it Dixieland but whatever you
want to call it, it swings and will make your feet tap
while putting a smile on your face.

Bach
cello suites are masterworks of western music which only
the most assured players perform. We’re in very safe,
if youthful, hands here with Pei-Jee Ng recently described
by the FT as ‘an artist whose age is irrelevant to his
musical maturity’. Daniel Kidane’s work is described as
‘quietly impressive’. Phoenix Story is a highly melodic
work, coloured by oriental modes to conjure the fabulous
bird which rises from the ashes.
