Kate Rusby   Whats on in Oxford

Level 42   Whats on in Oxford
Saturday 9th October: Live Nation are proud to announce that Level 42 are set to mark their 30th Anniversary with a series of headline shows across the UK in October 2010.

The band took the ‘80s by storm with their brand of jazz funk driven by Mark King’s trademark bass lines, and with their roots firmly set in the underground soul scene of the time they helped change the face of the music scene in Britain.

Saturday 4th September: It’s music and it’s cabaret…come and be delighted at our second birthday party. Pete Challoner and Tim Dalling from The Old Rope String Band are joined by the incredible Jock Tyldesley (longstanding lynchpin of The Flatville Aces) for an evening of madcap entertainment. They sing, dance and play their little hearts out on fiddles, guitar, piano, accordion, mandolin and anything else that comes to hand. Alongside, expect an interactive set, countless props and madcap larking about.

Friday 24th September: Phenomenal folk trio Uiscedwr (pronounced ‘Ish-Ka-Door’) and meaning water in both Welsh and Irish is one of Britain’s most exciting contemporary bands. Anna Esslemont, on fiddle and vocals, has been playing since she was six and Cormac Byrne (of Seth Lakeman band fame) is one of the best bodhran players in the country. Playing together since 2002, their intuitive partnership creates fantastic contemporary folk music, fusing many influences.

Sunday 3rd October: Like a breath of fresh Savannah air – West African fusion for the 21st Century!Born in the savannahs of northern Ghana in 1967, Atongo Zimba learnt the koliko or molo (two stringed calabash lute) from his grandfather. He was enthralled by the sounds of Fela Kuti’s afrobeat. Inspired, he left his home tto discover the music of his country, moving to Lagos, Nigeria and becoming the opening act for Fela Kuti at this club.

The Green Seagull
Saturday 23rd October: This 90 minute jazz suite, created by Tommy Evans (who has previously performed on the Pegasus stage as a youth theatre member) features voices, trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, guitar, piano, bass and percussion. Saturday 18th September: A modern take on the ancient music of the Oud. Using jazz and flamenco influences, Le Trio Joubran bring improvisation and virtuosity to their middle-eastern traditions. The trio are sons of a Palestinian master luthier, endowing them with a passion and exceptional musicianship for the instrument. With outstanding technical skill, the brothers spin out rich, textured drones or break out into distinct voices locked in expressive dialogue. The soulful Oud gives a voice to the trio’s ideas about history, musical evolution and the beautiful, seductive aesthetics of Arabic music.

The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists: His Majesty's Sackbutts and Cornetts   Music In Oxford

Saturday 2nd October: Performance of Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. The Vespers of 1610 is a monumental work in the history of Western music. Monteverdi’s spectacular writing for choir and orchestra, with colourful use of sackbutts, cornetts, theorbo and soloists is as spell-binding today as for the work’s first audiences. It will no doubt have many anniversary performances, but Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s return to the work with which the Monteverdi Choir’s unparalleled career began, is surely the one to catch. Music at Oxford is privileged to join forces with Wadham College, who celebrating its 400th anniversary, to bring one of the most enduringly magnificent works of the seventeenth century to Oxford.
